NUGGETS:
- Kicking off the 10th practice of spring football, Oregon State took to Reser Stadium for Tuesday's practice session.
- Heading into the week, head coach Jonathan Smith said that the team would really be honing in on situational work this week, and that's exactly what they did today. Whether it was goal-line situations, sudden-change scenarios, two-minute execution, or red zone work, the Beavers made sure Tuesday's session was chock-full of these moments.
- During the goal-line portion of practice, we got to see Jack Colletto take some reps at quarterback. It's no secret the Beavers love this package, and with the recent success on the field with it, how could you blame them?
- From my count, it looked like Colletto got about five live reps at the goal line, with him scoring on two of them. It's no secret that Colletto is going to keep it on the action, but even still, the defense was able to hold him out for almost no gain a couple of times, showcasing that defensive growth in short-yardage situations.
- Speaking of that defensive growth, it was on full display today. Because of the nature of the practice, which featured a lot more specific situations, it was easier to witness the steps taken. Most notably, during goal-line work when the defensive line was able to win the line of scrimmage several times. Whether it was keeping Colletto out, or stopping Ta'Ron Madison just short of the goal-line, there were several tangible moments where you could quantify the growth from a year ago.
- The tackling today was very physical. It seemed like during the live sessions of practice that multiple hats were flying to the ball and really laying the lumber. The best example came during 11-on-11 when Jaydon Grant was a free-runner on a safety blitz and rocked B.J. Baylor for a loss. I could hear the "pop" from the stands of Reser, and there were many oohs and aahs from the defensive sideline.
- In terms of a couple of coaches that caught my eye, or should I say my ear today were AJ Steward and Blue Adams. It's clear that these two coaches hold their respective guys to a very high standard and are always doing a lot of teaching out there.
- Receiver Tyjon Lindsey, who Smith mentioned was in a recent motorcycle accident, was back at practice today. He wasn't in full pads and didn't have his helmet on, but was wearing his uniform and was very vocal from the sidelines.
- Linebackers Avery Roberts and John Miller were working out with strength and conditioning coach Mike McDonald on the side today, mostly working on speed/agility drills. Both guys are still working their way back from injury, so continuing to see an uptick in activity is a good sign.
- Receivers Makiya Tongue & Treshaun Harrison were dressed today (no pads) but didn't participate.
