NUGGETS
The second day of Oregon State fall camp is in the books. Despite all the news swirling around, Jonathan Smith said he was impressed by how his team practiced today. Here’s everything that happened.

  • Ben Gulbranson and DJ Uiagalelei split the first-team reps today. While DJ ran with the 1’s in seven on seven, Ben rolled with the first team in 11-on-11. An interesting wrinkle in those team drills, Gulbranson went against the second-team defense with the first-team offense, and vice versa for DJ. Aidan Chiles played with and against backups for the second consecutive day.
  • Zach Card and DJ teamed up for what I thought was the play of the day. While dropping back to pass, the senior quarterback had to navigate the pocket to avoid a ferocious pass rush, stepped up, and ad-libbed a pass to a wide-open Card, who streaked across the field for an extra 30 yards. That’s the type of off-script play that can flip a drive, and the chemistry between QB and receiver really showed.
  • Last QB highlight of the morning came from Chiles, who struggled with his accuracy for most of the day, but linked up with frosh WR David Wells Jr., who torched his defender by two strides into the end zone for a TD on a go route in 7-7. A lot of the freshman struggles are showing from Chiles, something we didn’t see much of in the spring.
  • Huge shoutout to the defensive line today. That group dominated much of the live work, pushing all 3 quarterbacks out of the pocket on nearly every play. Among the group that stood out was Nikko Taylor, John McCartan, Takari Hickle.
  • Given that Jonathan Smith and Trent Bray have emphasized pass rush this offseason, it's clear they've made some improvements on that side of the ball.
  • There was a notable play when John McCartan lined up at his edge spot and blew up left tackle Luka Vincic on his way to what would have been a strong sack. This was a senior vs freshman type moment as McCartan just overpowered Vincic... However, Vincic moved to center shortly thereafter with a mix of the second and third teams and performed quite well... Really like Vincic's potential, but McCartan dominated him on that particular play...
  • And that wasn't it, as mentioned above, it really seemed like the DL and EDGE's had the OL's number today - whether it was DJ, Ben, or Aidan, the quarterbacks were definitely pushed off their spots... Of the three, I'd say DJ is the most comfortable and accurate throwing on the run... I'd say Chiles is slightly ahead of Ben in that regard as he's got a cannon of an arm, but Ben has worked on making plays outside of the pocket this offseason and had a couple nice throws on the move today.
  • A couple of nice plays from the secondary too: Jaden Robinson locked up Wells Jr. on a post route (we did see quite less of the projected starters in the secondary out on the field), and Tyrice Ivy nearly snagged his first interception of camp off an errant throw from Ben. Redshirt sophomore Jack Kane also had a nice play defending TE Jack Velling on a crossing route, despite the massive size disadvantage, Kane stuck his hand in front of the pass and batted it away from the TE.
  • Kickers got a little work on onside kicks inside, but that's it. No kicking on the field, rather just going through the motions. The Beavers would line up, snap the ball, but then would walk-through... Everett Hayes and Atticus Sappington lined up but didn't kick, while AJ Windsor handled the punting motions.
  • In terms of how the mood of practice was with the impending down news, I'd say the Beavers are saying and doing all the right things... Definetly clear that it's out of their control, and it's clear that the message Smith shared with the team is that 2023 is right in front of them and that it won't be a distraction moving forward. It's going to be very very interesting to see how this all shakes out, I could see it motivating the Beavers, being a distraction, or somewhere in between, but certainly a cloud hanging at the moment.
