WATCH: Tim Tibesar, Cody Anderson, & Alex Austin Talk Final Day Of Fall Camp
NUGGETS: Today's practice was cut about 45 minutes short, so it's a little lighter today👍
With today being the final official day of fall camp 2021, the Oregon State football team largely took it easy on Thursday afternoon. With the team gearing up to make the transition to Purdue prep following an off day tomorrow, today's practice wasn't quite as intense as it had been the previous couple of sessions.
- To further illustrate that point, the Beavers were only in shells today (helmet, shoulder pads, and shorts) and didn't do full-on live tackling.
- Because the team was electing to take it a little slower to ramp up towards game week, we saw a bit of a different practice on the final day. Unlike the previous practices which have been largely focused on individual position group drills and a lot of 11-on-11 and 7-on-7 work, today had a little bit of live-action sprinkled in with a fair amount of special teams' work.
- Speaking of that special teams' work, the most notable sequence of the day was during the kickoff return drill. The Beavers just might have a little razzle-dazzle in the works as Jack Colletto and Trevon Bradford practiced a couple of double pitchbacks to spread out the defense and have a little trickery on the return.
- On one occasion, Colletto picked up the ball, started to run forward before throwing it all the way across the field to Bradford who was slightly behind him and caught it before racing up the sideline. A couple of plays later, it was Bradford who took possession of the ball before throwing it back to Colletto, and then back to Bradford again. This was one of the more entertaining moments of practice today and it really seems like special teams' coordinator Jake Cookus has a few exciting special teams plays in his arsenal.
- In terms of the quarterback play, Sam Noyer was the first quarterback to take reps with the first team, while Chance Nolan was able to get some reps with a mix of the 1's and 2's. Tristan Gebbia didn't go live in today's session, but was dressed and doing light work with the QB's... Sam Vidlak was also able to get a few of the live reps as well, showcasing his cannon of an arm on several deep passes.
- Another unique play the team worked on today involved Chance Nolan, Teagan Quitoriano, and Trey Lowe. In this instance of excitement, Nolan threw the ball about 10 yards downfield to Quitoriano, he then pitched the ball back to Nolan, then he threw the ball slightly backward to Trey Lowe on the other side of the field before he raced down the sidelines. This tells me that the Beavers believe they have a real speed advantage if they can get defenders moving in multiple directions and the early returns in practice look promising...
- During the brief live portion of practice, Jaydon Grant & Rejzohn Wright each had interceptions of Sam Vidlak. These were almost hail-mary drills where the QB just had to let it fly from about 40 yards and Vidlak didn't quite have the deep accuracy to avoid the two INT's.
- Speaking of that hail mary drill, Noyer hooked up with Musgrave for a 35-yard touchdown. Noyer dropped back and fired a perfectly arced throw that was precisely placed right at the highest point of Musgrave's 6-foot-6 frame. The throw was put in a spot that only Musgrave could catch amongst three other OSU defenders and it showcased just how impactful of an x-factor he can be for the offense this year...
- The Beavers continued to rotate at kicker, with Atticus Sappington, Everett Hayes, and new kicker Joe Bowman splitting the reps. The competition has been nice to see, but I haven't seen anything to say this isn't Hayes' job...
- Scouts from the Carolina Panthers and Atlanta Falcons were present at practice today...
- In terms of injuries, offensive lineman Talise Fuaga was on a scooter as he had his left foot in a boot. Smith will likely address on Monday... Tim Tibesar also said that he's hopeful that Keonte Schad and John McCartan will both be in the mix soon as both have been limited throughout camp...
