Smith Interview
NUGGETS
- Today was the first open scrimmage day for Oregon State football as the Beavers scrimmaged in Reser Stadium with officials...
- After six practices and now having watched the Beavers scrimmage, I'd say the defense is ahead of the offense at this point. The offense was heavy into rotations and really mixed and matched a lot of guys, whereas the defense was a bit more set in their particular first, second, and third units.
- Ben Gulbranson was the first quarterback to take reps during the scrimmage session. Gulbranson was arguably the most consistent of the quarterbacks as he led two touchdown-scoring drives, while no other quarterback managed to find the endzone. His scoring drives consisted of an Isaiah Newell rushing touchdown and a 35-40 yard fade to Jesiah Irish in the endzone. On the Irish TD pass, Gulbranson would have been sacked by Drew Chatfield, but the play went on after Chatfield passed by Gulbranson and Irish was able to come down with the catch in the endzone. Gulbranson also ran with the second unit for a period of time as well...
- Gulbranson arguably made his best throw of spring football midway through the scrimmage when he placed a near-sideline fade right on the numbers of Zach Card.
- Speaking of Card, he's someone we've written about in detail these first few practices as he's made several nice catches and gotten a significant amount of reps. He made several more nice catches on Saturday and is a guy who is quickly becoming a favorite target of all the quarterbacks...
- DJ Uiagalelei began with the second-team offense, but quickly rotated into the first group as I'd say he and Gulbranson roughly split the first-team snaps today. Uiagalelei wasn't quite as sharp today as the defensive line and edge-rush pressure made him get rid of the ball quickly... His first drive was a three-and-out and his second was a punt from just past midfield. Later in practice, he led his unit toward the redzone a couple of times but ultimately wasn't able to punch it in, settling for field goal attempts...
- Despite having a couple of drives that ultimately stalled, Uiagalelei still made several really nice throws, showing off his arm strength and touch. One, in particular, was a cross-field sideline throw to Jesiah Irish that had little margin for error with the coverage and the sideline and he dropped it right in his numbers.
- He also connected with Silas Bolden on a quick receiver screen where Bolden was able to make several defenders miss and race up the far sideline for a 15-ish yard gain.
- Oluwasyei Omotosho tallied a would-be sack of Uiagalelei, showing a great burst off the edge...
- Uiagalelei is still building chemistry and rapport with his receivers as there were a couple of overthrows and misfires on Saturday, but I expect Uiagalelei to be more and more accurate as spring goes on. Late in the scrimmage, Uiagalelei just missed a would-be touchdown with Jeremiah Noga as it was just a bit over his head.
- Aidan Chiles continued to work with the third-team offense today, however, his unit was going against the second-team defense. He was able to make solid progress, marching his unit down the field and into the redzone, but it was a turnover on downs when Kelze Howard knocked down Chiles' pass at the line of scrimmage on fourth down.
- Speaking of Howard, he made another impressive pass breakup, this time off of Uiagalelei to force the drive into a field goal attempt. Howard plays with a ton of energy and should be rising up the defensive line depth chart sooner than later...
- Defensively, the Beavers should be pleased with what they're seeing from their new inside linebackers. Easton Mascarenas-Arnold and John Miller have been receiving the lion's share of the snaps, taking over for the departed Kyrei Fisher-Morris and Omar Speights, and their play has been very solid. Miller looks like a seasoned veteran, making key tackles and being in the right spot while Mascarenas-Arnold plays with a ton of energy and makes very physical plays on the football both as a run-stopper and a pass-defender.
- The scrimmage concluded with Chatfield recovering a Newell fumble and promptly returning it the length of the field for a score...
- In terms of today's rotations, several guys switched between the 1st and 2nd units today, including several who did both for some time... There is a lot of shuffling around currently as the team looks to find out which unit performs best together.
