Hey Edgers!
Today's interviews with DJ Uiagalelei, Damien Martinez, and new RB coach Keith Bhonapha...
NUGGETS
- The Oregon State football team took to Reser Stadium for the first time in spring for practice No. 5 on Thursday morning... The sunshine was abundant throughout the morning and a slight breeze inside the stadium... OSU was in shoulder pads and helmets after going full pads during the closed sessions...
- Catching ourselves back up to speed, it was our first practice that we could watch since last Thursday as the previous two sessions were closed.
- Regarding the quarterback play, today was the first day we saw DJ Uiagalelei run with the first-team offense during live 11-on-11 work. Ben Gulbranson ran mostly with the two's, while Aidan Chiles mostly ran with the threes.
- However, there was still a little mix and match between the units... DJ took roughly 70-75% of the first-team offense 11-on-11 snaps today, with Gulbranson handling the remainder.
- For the brief period that they did 7-on-7, it was Gulbranson working with the ones, Uiagalelei with the two's, and Chiles with the threes.
- Uiagalelei connected with Trevor Pope for a touchdown during the 7-on-7 work...
- Uiagalelei also connected with Bryce Caufield for a touchdown score on the far side during live work. Uiagalelei rolled out to his right, found Caufield moving up the sideline, and hit him right in the numbers for the score.
- Drew Chatfield had some nice plays today from his outside linebacker spot, recording two would-be sacks by my count... I think we're yet to see the ceiling for how effective Chatfield can be as an edge rusher, he closed out the 2022 campaign on a high note, particularly the bowl game against Florida...
- Trevor Pope made a really nice catch today, fighting through the (premature) contact of Jack Kane in the secondary. Pope is a guy we haven't heard a ton about prior to now, but he's made some nice catches this spring and could be someone to keep an eye on in the receiver room.
- Ben Gulbranson connected with Jesiah Irish for a touchdown during the 7-on-7 work...
- Defensive back Ian Massey had himself a morning as he intercepted a pass from Aidan Chiles and from Gulbranson to bring his tally to two on the day. He's certainly been someone who has caught my eye recently as he's been in the program for several years and has played solid football early on in spring.
- Sione Lolohea recovered a fumbled exchange between Gulbranson and center Dylan Lopez...
- Joe Swen also had an interception of Gulbranson today, making a nice play on the ball and bringing it back 10-15 yards... He's a guy the coaching staff is quite high on and I expect him to firmly be in the defensive backfield mix this season...
- Speaking of Chiles, he connected with Zach Card for a touchdown to close out practice... Those two certainly have built up a nice chemistry and rapport here early on and it should give Beaver fans a glimpse of what the not-so-distant future will look like.
- Overall I'd say that Uiagaelelei was the most consistent of the quarterbacks today, but it's still very early on as he's learning the nuances of the playbook and whatnot.
- As far as what the Beavers were doing when they weren't going live: We saw an abundance of core skills drills between the individual position groups. Whether it was the offensive line working on pass protection and footwork, quarterbacks working on timing with the receivers, or defensive linemen fighting through contact to reach the backfield, we saw the various position groups work on core fundamental skills.
