Hey Edgers!
Jonathan Smith Talks Scrimmage & First Six Practices
NUGGETS
- Under mostly sunny skies, the Oregon State football team officially wrapped up the first session of spring football on Saturday afternoon with its first scrimmage. The Beavers will now break for dead week and finals and return to the practice fields on March 31st...
- Unlike the previous sessions, today was a full-go scrimmage as the Beavers only did about 10 minutes of individual drills before settling into an hour plus of live work. Additionally, officials were on hand...
- My overall impression from the scrimmage was that the first-team defense was the standout. They really seemed to be flying all over the field and made some nice plays out there today.
- Early on, the first-team offense struggled to move the ball down the field as there were a couple of three and outs, some penalties, and some really nice plays made by the defense. They settled down and found their groove, but overall, I'd say the defense won today's scrimmage.
- In terms of the crowd, there were a lot of people spectating at today's practice. Mostly coaches & players' families, but also a couple of recruits as well. We weren't able to get a good look, but there were definitely a couple of recruits on hand. I can't say for certain, but I thought I saw Georgia Tech transfer portal RB Jamious Griffin.
First-team offense:
LT - Joshua Gray
LG - Marco Brewer
C - Jake Levengood
RG - Brandon Kipper
RT - Taliese Fuaga
QB - Chance Nolan
RB - Damien Martinez / Kanoa Shannon
WR - Tre'Shaun Harrison
WR - Zeriah Beason
WR - Tyjon Lindsey
TE - Luke Musgrave / Jake Overman
- Luke Musgrave caught a touchdown pass from Nolan during the mid-stages of the 11-on-11 work. He's really continuing to showcase what he can do as a receiver and it's appearing like offensive coordinator Brian Lindgren is perhaps targeting the position a bit more here early in spring.
- Damien Martinez had a couple of really nice runs again today and Jonathan Smith actually name-dropped him in the post-practice interview as someone who has stood out to him early on. Martinez is not your typical freshman in the sense that he's physically built and is picking up the system quickly. I wouldn't be surprised to see him rise up the depth chart sooner than later...
Second-Team
LT - Tommy Spencer
LG - Nick Suing
C - Tanner Miller
RG - Joe Quillin
RT - Brian Espinoza
QB - Tristan Gebbia
RB - Isaiah Newell / Gavin Haines / Damir Collins
WR - Jesiah Irish /
WR - Anthony Gould / Silas Bolden
WR - Trevor Pope / Rhewa Munyagi
TE - Bryce Caufield / Malik Kelley
- To close out practice, Tristan Gebbia found Jesiah Irish over the middle for roughly a 25-yard touchdown.
- Ben Gulbranson primarily worked with the third-team offense today... He's still working on his overall accuracy and decision-making, but he was able to move the third-team offense down the field in spurts. He also added a few more first-down scrambles as it seems he really likes using his athleticism...
- Isaiah Newell had a couple of really nice runs today, including a long that went for about 15-20 yards. We hadn't seen much of Newell at all during the first week, so seeing him take some reps and do quite well was good to see. There's definitely some good depth in that running back room...
- We also saw Dylan Lopez take some center snaps with the third-team as well.
- Kanoa Shannon had a 10-yard touchdown run during the 11-on-11 period.
The First Team Defense:
DL - James Rawls
DL - Simon Sandberg
DL - Sione Lolohea
OLB - Cory Stover
OLB - John McCartan
ILB - Omar Speights
ILB - Kyrei Fisher
DB - Rejzohn Wright / Wynston Russell
DB - Ron Hardge III
DB - Kitan Oladapo
DB - Akili Arnold
- During the 11-on-11 work, Cory Stover had a nice would-be sack against Chance Nolan. He's really worked on his body the past couple of seasons and is growing into an effective, athletic, and long edge rusher. Think he's got really good potential.
- John McCartan intercepted Nolan during the early stages of the 11-on-11 work. He played a screen-pass setup over the middle perfectly and stepped right in front of the pass and headed the other way. It's definitely going to be a plus to have him back this year...
- Ron Hardge III also had a couple of very nice hits in front of our viewpoint today. He's another DB with a lot of physicality...
- In terms of the overall defense, today was another day where I thought the pressure on the offensive backfield was impressive. Whether it was putting pressure on the QB's, closing the running lanes quickly, or having multiple hats to the ball, this defense is noticeably improved.
Second-Team:
DL - Cody Anderson
DL - Thomas Sio
DL - Tavis Shippen
OLB - Semisi Saluni / Cade Brownholtz
OLB - Ryan Franke
ILB - Jack Colletto
ILB - Easton Mascarenas
DB - Ian Massey
DB - Arnez Madison
DB - Skyler Thomas
DB - Jack Kane
- Easton Mascarenas may have delivered the hardest hit of spring during today's session... On a designed run play where Isaiah Newell took an inside carry, Jack Colletto helped take away a cutback lane and that left Mascarenas in a perfect position to deliver a thundering hit that drew oohs and aahs. He's definitely got a good amount of stopping power in his frame...
- Ian Massey made a really nice physical tackle on Damir Collins running on the outside. Collins took the outside handoff and was turning the corner upfield when Massey delivered one of the bigger hits of the day. It was right in front of our viewpoint and you could definitely hear the pads pop. He's been playing very physically in the secondary and like his potential.
- Speaking of Massey, he had arguably the most impressive interception of the day as he tracked down a Gulbranson pass intended for John Dunmore. Massey was able to time up the pass perfectly and leaped in front of Dunmore at just the right time.
- Ryan Franke made a really nice play getting into the backfield and securing what would be a sack of Tristan Gebbia. It was one of the more noticeable "would be" sack situations of the day as Franke came off the edge powerfully and quickly.
Special Teams
- Everett Hayes, Atticus Sappington, & Josh McCormick all took field goal attempts today... Hayes was no good from 46 (wide right), but hit his next three (46, 31, & 40). Sappington meanwhile hit from 36 yards and McCormick from 36 as well.
Injuries
- Smith said post-practice that we won't likely see Jaydon Grant or Isaac Hodgins during the remainder of spring. Grant recently had hand surgery (expected to be back for fall camp) and Hodgins had a bit of a setback in his recovery from a broken foot suffered last fall camp.
- Heneli Bloomfield was dressed but didn't participate...
- Deshaun Fenwick was back at practice and fully dressed, but didn't participate. This tracks with Smith's comments last week that veteran guys won't get a whole lot of burn.
- Makiya Tongue was out there on the sidelines but was dressed in sweats. We haven't seen him go live yet this spring and he may be another guy who doesn't get a lot of run out of caution.
