Not a day goes by where there's not some new development in this coaching search. It's not at the crazy level of Tennessee's search, but for the job being open since October 9, this is just something else.
- So Brady Hoke.. Yes, he did interview for the job. No, I don't think he's a serious candidate. I'm told he does have property in Corvallis and his ties to the area remain strong.
- Beau Baldwin update.. I'm told that Baldwin was not heard from Oregon State in a couple of days. Not sure exactly what to take away from that -- is Baldwin trying to get in touch with OSU and they're not returning calls? Or is it just a stalemate?
- I've reported this before, and now I'm hearing it from a THIRD different source -- all three sources completely unrelated from each other -- that Jim McElwain is still making a push for the Oregon State job.
- In talking with one person familiar with McElwain, I'm told that McElwain will need to seriously repair the way he conducts himself as he's known for being a big asshole. McElwain is under the Nick Saban coaching tree, so McElwain tries to emulate his mentor, but McElwain doesn't do a good job at it and is just a jerk and people don't like working for him. So if McElwain did get the OSU job, he'd have to work on a lot of things from a social standpoint.
- This is my current theory on Beau Baldwin: Barnes and Baldwin had a mutual agreement that Baldwin would be the next head coach at OSU (which is why the footballscoop report came out and why I reported that I heard Barnes had found his guy), but Baldwin got cold feet once he saw jobs like ASU and UCLA opening up. I've also heard he may have been eyeing the Washington State job if Leach were to leave since he has so many ties in that state. So Barnes didn't want to just sit on his hands while Baldwin got cold feet, so he goes out and interviews others like Lance Anderson (maybe) and Brady Hoke, to pressure Baldwin a bit.... As I said yesterday, I think that each day that passes, it's less likely that Baldwin ends up the next OSU coach. But I've thrown that theory at a couple of sources that have knowledge of the search that and thought my theory could be pretty accurate.
- Bryan Harsin is still very involved. Emerging as the favorite to get the job, IMO.
- Was passed along a note that there is a group of older donors that are pushing Barnes to hire a Dennis Erickson/Jonathan Smith combo, but Barnes is putting his foot down on that, apparently.
- Most college coaches are out on the road this week recruiting, but Oregon State is not. Cory Hall is not out recruiting. The Beavs will not have any official visitors this weekend either.
- Other schools are going to see the Beavers' commits while OSU is not on the road to see their guys. That's not good.
- Quick football notes... I keep hearing that Nall is looking to leave Oregon State. Stanford is coming up as an option... Hearing that Thomas Tyner is thinking hard about returning for a sixth year of eligibility... Hamilcar Rashed is a likely transfer candidate.
