One thing I appreciate about this coaching staff and team is their pragmatism coupled with guarded optimism. I haven't looked forward to a season as much as this one in years (since 2001, actually, but we won't talk about that). One thing I believe is we will have an exciting season, and a bowl game is not out of the question.
I started reminiscing, and remembered 1980 when I was a senior at OSU, and working at Murphy's. Joe Avezzano, bless his soul, met with the Murphy's faithful when he first arrived in Corvallis, and boldly predicted a perfect season and bowl game. We all chuckled a bit, but Joe was right... we went a perfect 0-11, and went to Japan and faced UCLA in the Mirage Bowl where we lost 3-34. At the Mirage Bowl, many of the memorabilia items sold at the game identified us as 'OREGON', which may have been a blessing.
Joe's debut? A 10-30 loss at Wyoming.
Needless to say, I do not expect a similar season. Great expectations for this group of student athletes! Bold prediction: 35-17, Beavs.
