Lingering Saturday thoughts:
- Not too much to say today. D is bad. Despite all the "strenght" gains they have had, they didn’t get much push from the front line. Season is early and I knew depth is an issue, but I was pretty disappointed to see that from the front 7.
- I mentioned on the board that I didn't feel good about this one at all. In January, I would have said this game was a win, but the more it got closer, I just didn't like the set up of the game. The new stadium, experienced QB, the way CSU finished the season last year. It seemed like a prime set up for getting our butts handed to us.
- I would like to rewind time and see how that game plays out with Toiai's TD called correctly.
- Certainly the pick-6 was a huge momentum changer, but some forgotten plays in that third quarter: Brandon Arnold should have picked off Stevens in the end zone on their first drive. Fourth down pick up by Stevens that Hungalu blew a tackle on. Also starting the half with a 50 yard return didn’t help.
- One thing that stood out besides that lack of pressure was horrid tackling. Too many instances where 2 yard gains turned into 7.
- Props to the o-line in pass protection in the first half. I thought they did well. Also thought OSU ran the ball fairly well in the first half. Certainly not the second.
- Coaches were way too pass happpy today. Run the ball. Especially that 3rd quarter drive that ended with the missed FG. 2nd 1 and it ends in a FG?
- Luton was making his first CFB start on the road. I thought he played great in the first half. Especially converting some third down throws. Unfortunately he missed on a a few costly plays, and forced the pick in the end zone. Still I saw some things that can be built on.
- OSU has two byes and the staff better use them. I would go to every JUCO I can, find as many DL as you can, and stress immediate playing time.
- I know it is hard to find 8 DL to run a 4-3 but two years and one game into the 3-4, I haven't seen much to give me hope.
- I wish I had something wise to say, but it is about the game that I thought it would be. Seen way too many early season road Beaver games to know not to be confident. Eventually, something will happen that swings momentum: pick 6, punt returns for TD, snaps over punters heads, etc. I've seen it all at this point. I would love to squash a team in one of these games at some point
- Count me in the camp that said we did not need to be 3-0 to go to a bowl. A 2-1 start still gives Beavs plenty of chances to get there. However, I didn’t see anything that said OSU can stop anybody.
- Coach Andersen always talks about big boy football. We have seen it once in his tenure against UO. I wish it would show up soon.
- I'm still with coach A, but as we get into year three, if there are more games like this, I will start to waiver. Keep in mind, we had almost 9 months to get ready for this game.
- To the AD: do not schedule home and home with MWC teams. Play cupcakes at home. Always. I know it is impossible to do that, but what did this game do for us?
- I am having a crisis as a fan. I love college football and have been with the Beavs for years. Seen my share of the Air Express, Pettibone, MR, DE, etc. For the last 7 years, save 2012, OSU has been a bad to mediocre (at best) program. I am having a real tough time justifying the time, energy, and effort on a bad product. I know the same can be said for hoops, but that is a two hour- time investment (also not in the pouring rain and cheaper). When I turned off the game today I couldn’t shake the feeling of massive regret. I have two kids who I couldve spent quality time with instead of wondering if I believe in coach A anymore. Am I way off here?
